Rugby is the third fastest-growing sport in the United States, according to a major study on sports participation.

The study, conducted last year by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, showed the number of people playing the game had risen 8.7 percent.

Only fast-pitch softball (13.8 percent) and ice hockey (12.2percent) experienced bigger growth.

"These are extremely exciting times for rugby in the United States," International Rugby Board Chairman Bernard Lapasset told Rugby News.

"We are witnessing strong growth in popularity and participation in one of our key markets for the sport."

"Also thanks to a strategic vision of development and the hard work and dedication of the national governing body, USA Rugby, more men, women and children are able to engage in rugby throughout the country."

Rugby is played in more than 117 countries by 3.5 million registered players.

American television broadcaster Direct Tv has purchased the rights to show the Super Rugby tournament as well as the Tri and Six nations tournaments.

Most major global rugby tournaments are now available in the USA which will give rugby a big boost as fans have complained for years that as rugby is not on television it is hard to follow the sport.
